North American Profiles of Standards
in Geographic Information
The technical committee 211 of ISO (ISO/TC 211) is the international committee of ISO that is responsible of standardization in the field of geographic information. Additionally, the Open Geospatial Consortium Inc. (OGC) is an industrial consortium that produces publicly available interface technical specifications. These standards and technical specifications aim at supporting interoperability in the field of geographic information.
Profiles to these standards and technical specifications are deemed necessary to precise the requirements of a community. As such, Canada and the United States via their respective standardization committees, the Committee on Geomatics of the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB-CoG) and the INCITS-L1 committee, are working jointly to the elaboration of profiles – the North American Profiles. These profiles fulfill the demands of the two countries in terms of standards and technical specifications in geographic information. The North American Profile of ISO 19115:2003 – Geographic information – Metadata (NAP – Metadata) has been the first profile worked out in this series.
You will find here additional information in support to North American Profiles in geographic information.
